I saw my first cactus flower of the year on a hike last Saturday (March 9th)- a single blossom on a little pincushion cactus tucked under a shrub. Most of the rest of the cacti are at least a week or two from blooming, I’m guessing. I would have missed this little one entirely if I hadn’t come back the same way I’d hiked out, which goes to show the power of changing your perspective and looking at things from multiple angles, right?

The desert is not my natural habitat, and I miss the ocean every day. But I appreciate the desert, and I have a deep respect for everything that is able to thrive here. And when the cacti start blooming, it’s magical.

Wherever you are, and whatever is happening in your life, I hope you make beautiful and surprising discoveries in the coming days and weeks.
